THE COMING GLORY [31 JAN 2010]
Listen to the media and you will hear this theme. Old means no good. Old things need to change, especially old gadgets. Old is irrelevant. Old is superseded, well… because it is old! This thinking has made its way into every nook of our life. Why? Simply because half-truths like these drive the economy. And we buy into it. We find old things do become more expensive to maintain, and old parts become more difficult to source. It’s the same trick used by every industry to get us to throw away and buy. In the process of pursuing change we become a generation that despises the old. Even truth. We think old truths are no longer true because it is well…. “old”. CS Lewis calls this “chronological snobbery”.
Jesus was not into this mind game when he talked about the old and the new moral order in the Sermon on the Mount (Mt 5: 17-48.) True, He prefaced each theme with “you have heard it said…” and then added “but I say to you…” as if he was rebutting the old and advocating the new. But He wasn’t. He was merely pointing to what the prophets and the law had sought to say all along: that God looks at our heart as well as our action. In areas like righteousness, murder, lust, adultery, revenge, treatment of our enemy, Jesus tells us the heart of the issue is the issue of the heart. Just a glance will tell us we can never ever live this moral code out. So is there a way?
The only hope is for God to live in us. And this is exactly what God has done! He became man, experienced our struggles, surrendered and died. He died because He was man and He could do it perfectly because He was God. Our attempt at truly living will succeed only as we share in His dying just as our thinking succeeds only because it is a drop out of the ocean of his intelligence. When we die in Him we live out His life in us. The old becomes new. If we say “yes!” then this journey begins from inside out today. It includes being part of a great church on the move, growing in being authentic, broken and courageous. So sign up for a cell today! Discover the joy of living in Him. Reach out into the community! It could change you forever!
