Welcome to Skyline!
Half way through my chocolate bar at lunch, I caught a newspaper report that Cadbury’s had issued a recall of all their products from the Asia- pacific region. I stopped, looked at my delicious bar of Cadbury’s all-nut half wrapped in silver foil wondering if I was poisoning myself with melamine. Nah; it looked too carefully produced to have that stuff in it. No way. But then I had thrown the paper wrapper away and had no idea where the bar was made. Shall I or shan’t I? A few seconds later the rejected bar was on top of a trash bin. I walked away sorrowful not just because the Daily Express had come between me and my chocolate bar but more because it was another callous, immoral, be-damned outworking of rampant greed in human society. What’s happening to our world?
The Epistle of John tells that darkness hates light. Greed is from the realm of darkness and is part of the lust of the eyes and the pride of life which are of the world and must one day fade away. When light was shone on Wall Street people began to realize that problem was both systemic and global. Millions of people, both guilty and innocent are paying the price and we may soon be in a financial-shaking global recession. Currency, house prices, stocks, commodities have plummeted & institutions crumbled. Who’d have thought it would come to all this?
The Bible says only he who does the will of the Lord will abide forever (1 Jn 2:17). Many years ago while reading the journal of Jim Elliot who was martyred while trying to reach the Auca Indians as a missionary in Ecuador, I came across a note he had made on reading 1 Jn 2. He had prayed: “Lord make me a crisis man, a fork in the road so that people will have to choose one road or the other when facing Christ in me.” I was deeply moved by this and it stayed in my heart all my student days. It was also what made me return to Malaysia, it has been what’s kept me ministering all these years and serving the Lord. Even when I’ve at times been faithless, He has remained faithful (2 Tim 2:13). And now in time like this globally and in our nation politically, we need to stand on the unchanging truth. He is Lord and His word abides forever!
