Faith Story by James Liew

My mother is 82 years old, with no previous medical condition. But on 27 May this year, my mother feeling unwell. Subsequently, she was admitted to hospital on 30 May 2021.There the doctor informed that there was something in her intestines, and that surgery was required.

It was a struggle for me to have her admitted to hospital especially during the current Covid-19 pandemic. Family members would not be allowed in to take care of her. I prayed for her healing and quick recovery, but, sometimes my flesh overcame my spirit. I realized it was a testing time for me because I still felt anxious over my mother’s condition after prayer. During this challenging time, I decided to request my Connect Group to pray for her healing.

On 11 June, my mother was discharged from the hospital after successful surgery. That day, she shared her experience during this period in hospital. She told me she was really scared in the beginning after she was admitted to the hospital. However, she managed to overcome her fear and loneliness by praying, reciting Bible verses, praising God with hymns and songs. She was even sharing the Gospel with other patients. On the day she had surgery, she prayed to the LORD and submitted everything to Him.

Through this incident, the Lord reminded me that: –

  • The God I worship is omnipotent and omnipresent. HE is present with my mother in the hospital although I was unable to be there. HE never stops listening to prayer despite my lack of faith;
  • When my flesh wants to overcome my spirit, I feel loss and anxious. However, praying, and reading the Word of God are the only options I have to strengthen my spirit. For God is always gracious, and comforts me through the Holy Spirit Who dwells in me.
  • There is a family called a Connect Group from whom I could seek support. Their prayer support gave me tremendous encouragement.

Lastly, I want to close with a Scripture in Psalm 23:4
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil; For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

PRAISE THE LORD! ALL GLORY TO GOD! AMEN!
