Faith Story by Sam & Dorothy

My husband and I lived in Hong Kong for over 10 years, our first two children were born there. But deep down, we wanted to move back to KK — where I grew up — and to be close to my father, whose health was declining. The problem was: finding a job here that could meet our family’s financial needs felt almost impossible.

In 2019, the stress at my husband’s workplace became unbearable, and he wanted to quit. I resisted at first — I thought it wasn’t wise, especially with two young children. But as I prayed, my daily Bible reading brought me to the verse: “Submit to your husband.” (Ephesians 5:22) So I did.

Not long after, still concerned about what we would do, I came across another verse: “Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” (Isaiah 43:19)

It spoke so strongly to me that a peace beyond understanding filled my heart. I budgeted—we had savings to last a year or two, and maybe we could try some online businesses during that time.

So, without any financial assurance, we moved to KK in early 2020.

Two weeks later, COVID hit. The kids stayed home for homeschooling, and between children, chores, and trying out business ideas, we got nowhere. Then I found out I was pregnant with our third child, making it even harder to be productive.

Then came Faith Promise Day. I felt God prompting me to sow — a sum that was half of what we had left. My husband hesitated, until one day he overheard a sermon playing: “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” (Matthew 6:26)

He wept. We’d heard that verse many times before, but that day it pierced his heart. He said, “It’s only a matter of time before we run out — why not put it in God’s hands first, like the widow in Elijah’s story?” So, we sowed, having bold faith that the Lord is our Shepherd, we would not lack.

Our financial pressures grew. Our business was still slow. The baby was due soon, with hospital and confinement costs ahead. I calculated — we had only two months left after the baby’s birth.

I was overworking myself, and at one point the baby’s weight fell weeks behind the growth chart and didn’t improve for several check-ups.

One night, during a healing prayer in an online sermon, I placed my hand on my belly and prayed: “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.” (Psalm 139:13)

Immediately, the baby kicked joyfully. The next morning, at my routine pregnancy check-up, the doctor said the baby’s weight had completely caught up!

That miracle strengthened my faith — knowing God is faithful to His Word. So, we prayed and give thanks even more, steadfast that our financial provision would be secured before the baby came.

Then, out of the blue, my husband’s ex-manager called with a new, bigger role — with a special arrangement to allow him to work remotely from KK — on a project he had always wanted to be involved in. After some thought, he said yes. That night, I went into labor. The timing was so precise to my prayer that we would have financial provision secured before the baby came.

But the faith training didn’t end there. As it was a new role, the approval process took weeks, and at one point it seemed that the offer might fall through. I reminded my husband, “The more impossible it seems, the more glory to God.” We prayed for every detail — timing, team members, and salary — and even gave again as we believed we had received.

Then, things sped up fast. Salary discussions came. Given it was a bigger role, my husband hoped for a better salary, but his manager offered less than what we had in mind. He discussed with me whether to accept as it was — he didn’t feel right to trouble his manager, knowing the company’s usual limits. Again, I encouraged him to keep proclaiming God’s favour, trusting God would answer our prayers even though we had no idea how to negotiate.

Miraculously, without even the mention of our expectations, the final salary offer came — exactly the amount we had prayed for. The first paycheck arrived right before the end of May — just as we had asked God, and it was more than enough.

There were still challenges along the way, but seeing these miracles unfold, my husband’s heart was transformed. He is now firmly rooted in knowing we can trust God in every step and every challenge. The same stressful work no longer crushes him — he knows God is with him and for him. I sometimes joke that God still has a purpose for him there. Looking back, God truly made everything beautiful in His time — my father passed away during COVID, and I got to spend precious moments with him before he went. If we hadn’t moved when we did, I wouldn’t even have been there for his funeral.

I want to encourage every married couple that marriage is a beautiful blessing because we can lift each other up in faith. Sometimes I encourage him; other times he encourages me. If your spouse isn’t at the same place spiritually — don’t give up. There might just be a chapter behind. Keep on praying, and let God write the story for His glory.
