Faith Story by Pete Wong

After studies in Kuala Lumpur, I worked there in an advertising agency as an Art Director. I loved Rock, Metal, Thrash, and Grunge music. At that time, I was also a heavy smoker — two packs a day, about 40 sticks. On the outside, I looked happy, enjoying life, going to discotheques, and head-banging to music. But deep inside, there was an emptiness in my heart.

One day, my neighbour, a law student, shared the Gospel with me. At that time, I didn’t reject it, but I didn’t accept Christ either.

Later, when I came to Sabah, I noticed there were many churches in Kota Kinabalu. A friend once invited me to his church. There, I heard the pastor there say that when Jesus returns, He would only come to their church because they were the only true church. That was hard for me to believe. Surely theirs couldn’t be the only true church.

When I got back to work, I asked some of my colleagues which church was the true church, but none could give me an answer. Finally, I asked my immediate boss. He told me to ask my second boss, Michael. When Michael shared with me about Jesus, I couldn’t hold back my tears—I cried like a baby right there in the office. That day, I accepted the Lord.

That year, on Christmas Eve, I made a decision to quit smoking. For years I had tried to quit but I have always failed. I told my church members about my desire, and they surrounded me in prayer. On that night, before midnight, I wanted to finish the last packet of cigarettes. Just before 12 midnight, I threw away my favourite Zippo lighter and the remaining cigarettes. The next morning, when I woke up, I had no desire to smoke again. Until today, I have never picked up smoking. Hallelujah!

Through my testimony, I believe this: with God, miracles happen.

Let us not be afraid to share the Gospel in our workplaces. I was the receiver, but Michael was the one who shared.
